earl1Earl Barnes, “Very Rarely”

Very Rarely
Very rarely do you consider what the people you interact with daily really think about you
Very rarely do you look around and see no one that looks like you
Very rarely do you read the terms like ape, monkey, animal and it’s referring to you
Very rarely do you feel judgment from a facial expression or body gesture
Very rarely do you question why people don’t sit next to you on the metro
Very rarely do you witness your kids learn about life’s color lessons
Very rarely do you hear your music referred to as crap music
Very rarely do you see people that you know in different setting and they not see you
Very rarely do you wonder if your treatment by people in businesses was not just them having a bad day
Very rarely do you make an extra effort to show officers that you are respectful
Very rarely do you have people talk about your leaders as if they are only about the spotlight
Very rarely do you say to yourself, here we go again, more true colors coming out
Very rarely do you find yourself navigating in two different worlds
Very rarely do you turn on the TV to find yourself mis- or under represented
Very rarely do you have someone remind of you how far things have come as a means of comfort
Very rarely do you contemplate the impossibility of trying to trace your ancestry
Very rarely do you reflect on your elders and wonder how they made it in a time so much worse
Very rarely do you think about things like this, but I do EVERYDAY
